    Taking Giant Steps

With reverence to the great John Coltrane. My visualization of John Coltrane's music is of flying dragonflies, especially when listening to Giant Steps. Great music can provoke a secondary sensory perception and for me it's visual.

Michal Levy, a designer and musician, writes about her connection between music and visual imagery, producing a fantastic animation set to Giant Steps.

Source material credits: John Coltrane photos by David Redfern; music notation from "Conquering Giant Steps" by Corey Christensen, published in the September 2005 issue of Guitar Player magazine; two original photographs used as background textural images

Photo collage composed in Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 3 Beta

A reminder of the The Trees, by Neil Peart

    Taking Five

As inspired by The Dave Brubeck Quartet's Take Five. Those cats in sharp suits playing the coolest jazz made me think of swirling shapes floating on a blue field.

Dave Brubeck will be one of the recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors for 2009 on December 5th (to be broadcast later in the month on CBS). Brubeck is also a fierce advocate for racial equality and in a moving segment in Ken Burn's Jazz, speaks passionately about this issue with his father's words.
